The clinical legal education landscape is transforming in ways that create both real challenges and exciting opportunities: We’re seeing an evolving student body; transitions to hybrid and remote work; the rise of AI in legal education and practice; the spread of the NextGen Bar Exam and alternative pathways to licensure; increasing demands on clinicians and a growing array of experiential offerings; heightened student awareness of the emotional toll of lawyering; relentless exposure to traumatic events with local, national, and international impact; and other major shifts. How do we take the traditional principles of clinical legal education and modify them to serve our students, our clients, and ourselves in this new era? Where do we have to develop new philosophies or approaches? We invite you to collaborate with us to think through how we might learn from tried-and-true methods, and which innovations we might need to embrace, to best benefit legal education and our communities.
